The sun was shining and thanks to the fantastic organisational skills of Mr De, our new look Athletics Carnival was a huge success last Friday. With our Year 7s moving to High School this year it was decided to take the opportunity to re-jig the carnival events in order to maximise student participation as well as parent viewing, while minimising the amount of “down time” students spent in the bays. Teachers reported back positively on the change of format with far less problems being encountered with bored children!
The carnival started on Monday 14 September with our Jumps and Throws along with the 800m event for our older children. From these first 22 events, Pegasus went into the main carnival with a slight lead over Centaur, Apollo and Thor. For our Year 1 -3 students, this was the first opportunity they had to compete in many of the team games on offer. As well as their running race, students were given the opportunity to participate in the sack relay, tin relay, corner spry, leaderbag and tunnel ball events before returning to class to complete some reflective activities. At this stage Pegasus still held a handy lead over Centaur, Apollo and Thor!
Our Year 4 – 6 students entered the arena of battle after recess where they worked through their running events as well as some of the traditional team events such as Leaderball, Passball, Tunnelball, Tin Relay and Baton Relay. The carnival concluded with each faction squaring off against the others in a Tug of War. A fantastic day was had by all with Pegasus (620) winning the carnival from Centaur (559), Apollo (461) and Thor (412). Centaur capped off their very good day, taking out the Team Work Trophy and individual championship medallions went to the following students;
