Enrolling Your child

Who needs to enrol?
All children of compulsory school age must be enrolled in school and attend every day – this is the law.

In Western Australia, children can start their education in Kindergarten.  Compulsory schooling starts the following year in Pre-Primary.  Every child from Pre-Primary to Year 12 is guaranteed a place at their local public school.

Enrolling your child in Kindergarten
enroll-2Gosnells Primary School offers a high-quality part-time Kindergarten program.

While it is not compulsory, almost all parents send their children to Kindergarten so children get the best start to learning at school.  To enrol, your child must be four years old by 30 June in the year they attend Kindergarten.

If you are applying to enrol your child in Kindergarten for this year or next year, you can do this now.

You will be informed of the outcome of your application by the school as soon as possible.

If the number of applications for enrolment exceeds the number of places available you may be referred to a nearby Kindergarten which has places available.  The School Education Regulations 2000 specify how Kindergartens and Community Kindergartens must prioritise enrolments.

Enrolling your child in Primary School – Pre-Primary
enroll-1Pre-Primary is the first year of compulsory school.  Every child of Pre-Primary age is required to attend school and is guaranteed a place at their local school.  To enrol, your child must be five years old by 30 June in the year they attend Pre-Primary.

If your child is currently attending our Kindergarten but you live outside one of our optional local intake areas, you will need to re-enrol them in Pre-Primary for next year.

enroll-3If your child is currently enrolled in our Kindergarten and you live within one of our optional local intake areas and you plan to stay at our school for Pre-Primary, you don’t need to re-enrol.

You can apply to enrol your child now to start Pre-Primary this year or next year.  You will be informed of the outcome of the application by the school as soon as possible.

Follow these easy steps to enrol your child:

Step 1 Contact our school for an application for enrolment form or download this one:

Visit the school office between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday to Friday during school terms if you’d like us to help you complete the application.

Step 2 Submit your application for enrolment form (Part A) at the school as soon as you can and provide copies of:

  • your child’s Birth Certificate or birth extract (original or certified copy – telephone the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages on 1300 305 021 if you do not have one) or equivalent identity documents (e.g. passport);
  • your child’s Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement, no more than two months old with a status of ‘up to date’ (see important information below regarding Immunisation for Kindergarten enrolments);
  • proof of your child’s usual place of residence:  for example, utilities account, lease agreement, ownership of the property, driver’s licence or statutory declaration.  Principals may accept a maximum of three documents as evidence of your child’s usual residential address.  Principals are able to request additional information where this is necessary to confirm your child’s usual place of residence;
  • copies of any Family Court or other court orders (if applicable);
  • visa details (if applicable).

Immunisation Requirements for Kindergarten enrolments (effective Term One 2020)

There have recently been changes to the immunisation requirements of children enrolling in Kindergarten and you now need to provide:

  • an Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement, no more than two months old with a status of ‘up to date’; or
  • an AIR Immunisation History Form, no more than six months old, if the child is on a catch up schedule; or
  • a valid immunisation certificate issued or declared by the Chief Health Officer.

If your child’s immunisation status is ‘not up to date’, and if we do not receive the above information, we cannot enrol your child.

You can access your child’s Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) Immunisation History Statement by:

  • phoning the Australian Immunisation Register enquiries line on 1800 653 809
  • visiting Medicare Online through the MyGov website
  • using the Express Plus Medicare app
  • visiting a Medicare or Centrelink office

If you would like to accept a place at our school for your child, please provide the immunisation documentation at time of completing the Enrolment Form.

If your child is ‘not up to date’ and you have no other acceptable documentation, your child may be eligible for exemption because of particular family circumstances.  Please contact us to discuss these.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to call us on 9234 6350.

Step 3 For Kindergarten and Pre-Primary enrolments for next year, you will receive a letter either offering a place (as per the Regulations) or indicating that no place is available.  You will receive this letter after the enrolment closing date.
Step 4 If you have an offer of a place for Kindergarten and Pre-Primary for next year and want to accept it, visit our school to complete the enrolment process.  For Pre-Primary to Year 6 enrolments for the current year, an official enrolment form (Part B) will need to be completed upon receipt of the Application for Enrolment.  A starting day for your child will be discussed.
